Anti-Cancer Study of Medicinal Plants from Region XII

PHRR200202-002478

Screening of plants from Region XII with Potential Anti-Cancer Activity

This program proposes to focus on finding promising new drug candidates for new therapeutic options to combat cancer. An ethnobotanical survey conducted by Pascual (2019) will serve as the baseline for this program. The survey identified 29 indigenous or endemic plant species which are potential sources of anticancer compounds.  This ethnobotanical study was carried out to explore and record those plants and plant parts used by 15 traditional healers from North Cotabato after proper permit from Local government units, Indigenous Knowledge System and Practices (IKSP), and DENR were obtained.  A series of consultations with the indigenous communities/IP elders/IP leaders in the Aromanon Manobo, Obbo Manobo and Bagobo Tagabawa tribes were done in selected areas of North Cotabato.  A prior informed consent was also requested before the interviews were carried out focusing on the local names of the medicinal plants, their medicinal uses, the plant parts used and methods of preparation and of administering treatments to patients. From these data collected from the ethnobotanical survey, plant resources will be identified, utilized and isolated as drug candidates or drugs for drug development.

The first phase of the program  aims to screen plant species for their potential anticancer properties. It will ultimately generate priority non-toxic bioactive potential anticancer plant extracts that passed the orthogonal/secondary screening that will serve as basis for the isolation, purification and structure elucidation of the potential lead for the anticancer compound.
