Assessment of Knowledge and Attitude about Traumatic Dental Injuries First Aid of Faculty Members and Undergraduates of Bachelor in Physical Education in the UP College of Human Kinetics of A.Y. 2021-2022

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic dental injury (TDI) is an injury or damage of the teeth and/or other hard and soft tissues in the oral cavity caused by its collision with a moving or stationary object. It can occur unexpectedly, in a lot of different situations. Exercise of sports posed a greater risk of having these injuries therefore, necessitating a need for Physical Education and sports-related professionals to know immediate precautionary measures after TDI happens in school and sports activities since they are usually the first to handle these cases.

OBJECTIVES: The general objective of this study is to assess the knowledge and attitude of faculty members and undergraduates of Bachelor in Physical Education (BPE) in the University of the Philippines College of Human Kinetics concerning Traumatic Dental Injuries First Aid. Its correlation to certain demographic factors of the BPE faculty members and undergraduates will also be analyzed.

METHODS: The participants that will be included in the study are faculty members and undergraduates of the BPE program of the UP College of Human Kinetics in A.Y. 2021-2022. A cross-sectional analytical study design will be used. An online survey questionnaire using the platform Google Form accessed with UP mail account will be utilized to gather data. To determine the association between demographic factors and the knowledge and attitude of UP CHK BPE program faculty members and undergraduate students, the Chi-square test for independence will be used.

RESEARCH DISSEMINATION PLANS: The collected data may be utilized in the future for programs by the UP College of Dentistry, the Philippine Dental Association, and the Department of Health with the UP College of Human Kinetics, the Commission on Higher Education, and the Department of Education, which may aim to overcome the lack of recognition of traumatic dental injuries, its treatment, and its possible impact to the quality of life. Through the dissemination of this information to the key stakeholders in the field of sports, good oral health in terms of aesthetics and function will be promoted through the preservation of injured teeth which results in the protection of the quality of life of the injured person. This is in line with the UP College of Dentistry Research Agenda where this research may serve as basis for national policies and programs promoting oral health education and reducing prevalence of common oral diseases, and this research also relates to dental education and training.
