The impact of speech and lip reading training and adjustment counseling on the elderly individual’s ability to cope with mild sensorineural hearing loss

Hearing impairment is common in the elderly occurring in one third over 60 years old and half over 85 years old. Such disability impacts on the elderly’s daily living and quality of life. The standard remedies for hearing impairment are any of the devices such as hearing aids, amplifying systems, and cochlear implants. The costs of hearing aids range from the cheapest at twenty thousand to the most refined at two hundred thousand pesos. This is certainly prohibitive for most Filipinos. This study will develop an intervention protocol that includes lip and speech reading and adjustment counseling to aid in the adjustment of the hearing impaired elderly and his family members; and to investigate the effects of such protocol on Filipino elderly with mild to moderate hearing impairment.
