Abstract

In a mass stool survey conducted at the National Center for the Mentally Retarded, Elsie Gaches Village, 30/176 (16.9%) positive for Giardia lamblia trophozoites and/or cysts were treated with ornidazole, 500 mg twice daily for adults or 30 mg/kg/day for children for 3 days, and diloxonide furoate 20 mg/kg daily for 10 days. In 22 patients followed longitudinally, monthly stool examinations for 6 months showed successful treatment, defined as parasitologic cure (3 consecutive negative stool examinations) with no relapse (revert to positive stool exams) within 2 to 4 weeks post-treatment. One reinfection occurred at the 4th month, and 3 each at the 5th and 6th month. This reinfection rate of 31.8% (7/22) six months post-treatment was based purely on parasitologic evaluation as patients did not manifest clinical symptoms. These findings suggest the efficacy of ornidazole in giardiasis, and the possibility of a quarterly parasite control strategy in such a set-up where symptomatic carriers are a constant reservoir of infection.(Auth.
