Detection of Entamoeba histolytica in routine stool examination.

A multicenter study was initiated at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in 1988 to ascertain the incidence of amebiasis in six areas presumed to be "hyperendemic" and to assess the performance of laboratory personnel from the readings of permanent slide mounts prepared in situ. Based on RITM identification of Entamoeba hystolytica the prevalence of parasite-related diarrhea ranged from 0-1.9% in the six areas, with an overall prevalence rate of 1.1%.
